I was wondering, when using the SoftwareSerial.h library do you manage to successfully communicate with the ECU after the 5 baud init? By this I mean do you successfully receive the values 0x55 0x01 0x8A?

You may use this program with generic KKL (a.k.a. VAG-COM 409.1) interface - either RS-232 or USB version with OBD-2 to FIAT 3-pin adapter. For USB interface it is recommended to use FT232 based interface.You may buy such RS-232 or USB interface and adapter at Viaken.pl.It will also work with Multi ECU Scan (a.k.a. MES) "dedicated" KKL interface sets.
